Why on Earth are we freakishly obsessed with money?
Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy the mythical idea of financial stability as much as the next millennial. Having money is nice and comfortable and worth effort.
I guess what I’m trying to say is, why are we freakishly obsessed with status symbols?
Today, I’ve created an every day glam makeup look with one of the best bargain brands at the drugstore: Wet n Wild. I would put this look to the test against any similar look done with only luxury brands. Some of these products you may be familiar with after watching the internet rave about them (especially the megaglo highlighters!! eeeeeek!). That’s because Wet n Wild is truly a brand where the cost of the product is extremely low but the quality of the product is insanely impressive. With most of these products, if they cost three times as much I would still think they were a steal for how well they perform.
By the way, this isn’t sponsored, I just really love Wet n Wild.
But enough raving, let’s talk money.
Movies, music videos, youtubers, instagram models: they are all showing us a lifestyle of extravagance. One that you may begin to think is normal because of the constant media reminders of luxury. However, this is not the case. In fact, only about 10-15% of Americans have much disposable income to speak of. Yet, the portrayals of American life the world is inundated with every day would have you believe everyone is drinking grey goose and driving Beemers.
An interesting turn of events has been the pop culture shift to portraying more realistic expectations. Some examples of this are trends like the one Alicia Keys started of abandoning makeup and go all natural. Another is a trend in songwriting that I believe can really be attributed to Lorde’s Royals, but is followed by songs like Colbie Caillat’s Try. Both of these songs tell young women that they don’t need to measure up to the impossible standards, they can just be themselves. I’m here to tell you that you don’t have to be glamorous and extravagant.
But I’m also here to tell you that if you want to be glamorous and extravagant then you should go right ahead and do it. I appreciate this type of sentiment in the new song Most Girls by Hailee Stienfield. You should do what makes you feel best inside and out. To me, that is dressing up and being extremely feminine. I love it and therefore I should do it.
But Katherine, I hear you saying, I make no money at my two part time jobs. I love being extravagant, but I have no money to spend on luxuries! Well, that’s where bargain shopping comes into play. This Monday’s segment is about beautiful bargain makeup. However I will be covering a lot of money saving tactics on this blog, so please subscribe to my email list to be notified when I post.
Below are all the products I used in my makeup video.
